The Orthopedics Department includes all units specializing in various orthopedic treatments, including hand, shoulder, knee, spinal, hip, and foot treatments.
The department also treats other skeletal pathologies - automobile accident injuries, work accidents, wartime injuries, injuries characteristic of old age, knee and hip replacements, arthroscopy, sport injuries and locomotor system tumors. The department regularly deals with teaching students and interns, as well as with basic clinical research, in collaboration with the department's nursing staff.
The Orthopedics Department's medical staff is supported by a skilled team of nurses. Together, we strive to provide our hospitalized patients with the best medical and nursing care they require.
Our worldview is based on the patient's welfare being a core value of our department, which inspires all of the department's professional work, and, accordingly, we perceive our commitment to promoting the patient's health, so that they may attain physical and mental welfare.
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a method used to diagnose and treat joint problems (knee, shoulder, ankle, etc.) after the patient receives anesthetics, a small optical device is inserted (5mm in diameter), with a video camera at its end. The device can allow physicians to inspect the joint on a TV screen. Later, small surgical instruments are inserted into the joint via small holes, and these are used to remedy the issue identified during the arthroscopy. This method allows the patient to quickly resume their regular activity, and reduces post-operation morbidity.
Foot and Ankle
The service includes providing diagnosis and treatment consultation for a variety of foot-related issues. We treat structural, congenital and acquired foot pathologies, various deformities and acute or chronic inflammatory changes, such as with patients suffering from rheumatism. The treatments provided include conservative treatments such as medications, orthopedic instruments and accessories, as well as surgical interventions.
Additional populations treated by the Department:
Foot and Ankle trauma patients, including recurring dislocations, ankle fractures and related complications and foot-bone fractures, including fractures in the foot and heels. Patients receive traditional treatments, and, when needed, undergo operations to treat fractures and complications, such as ankle arthroscopies, restoration of ankle ligaments and immobilization of large joints harmed by the fractures.
Patients with sport-related injuries in their feet and ankles, both amateurs and professionals, including stress fractures more common with soldiers treated in the Department.
A principal population comprising a substantial portion of the service rendered to patients is the diabetic foot population. A principal goal for our Department is saving limbs. In collaboration with the hospital's Plastic Surgery Department and in consultation with surgeons specializing in blood vessels, we strive to save the limbs of diabetic patients from being amputated.
Hip Joint
The Department treats a wide variety of issues, both in adults as well as in children.
Most common issues for adults:
Femur neck fractures - as a person grows older, the density of their bones decreases dramatically (osteoporosis) - which would explain why older people suffer from a lack of equilibrium and other diseases, and thus are more liable to fall and break their femur neck.
Degenerative modifications of hip joints - characterized by the gradual wearing of the joint's cartilage and by joint space constriction. These changes manifest in pain felt in the hip joint, in limping, and in limited movement range, as well as in the impairment of daily functioning. The surgical option includes a full replacement of the hip joint using an artificial implant which imitates the existing joint's shape.
Common problems for newborns:
developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) - this hip joint deformity can manifest in varying degrees of acuity, beginning with a slight flattening of theAcetabulumin less acute cases, and ending with total dislocation with substantial flattening of the joint. It is most important to discover early by ultrasound (a simple, painless test) such pathologies, so as to avoid future damages to the hip joint and limping in old age.
Hand Surgery
The Hand Treatment Unit performs diagnosis, treatment and repair of various hand trauma injuries - fractures, dislocations, tendon and nervous injuries, as well as rheumatic degenerative diseases of the hand.
In addition, the unit conducts operations for the restoring the nervous segment, tendon implant, tendon transfer, prosthetic implants for hand joints, etc.
As part of our surgical services, we perform:
·Treatment of acute injuries in upper limbs, including bone, joint, tendon and nerve injuries.
·Treatment of consequences and later complications of injuries.
·Treatment of congenital disorders and deformities.
·Surgeries for repairing wrist and finger disorders.
·Treatment of acute and chronic tendinitis and trigger finger.
·Treatment of syndromes characterized by confinement of peripheral nerves.
·Traditional treatment of and surgery for Duputyren's disease.
·Amputation of benign tumors.
·Treatment of acute and chronic infections of the upper limbs.
·Treatment of osteoarthritic hand disorders.
·In addition, ambulatory operations are performed using local or partial anesthetic for outpatients.
Shoulder Surgery
Shoulder problems are common - 5% of all patients who visit their family doctor do so due to shoulder problems. The Shoulder Unit focuses on the diagnosis, research and treatment of various shoulder problems. Treatment of various shoulder joint problems, such as rotator cuff tendon tearing, shoulder dislocations, frozen shoulders, tendon sclerosis, fractures, degenerative modifications of shoulder joints.
In surgery in general, and in the field of shoulder surgery in particular, there has been a current trend in recent years of performing less invasive operations, using the arthroscopic method (by way of inserting surgical instruments into the shoulder using small holes). In our unit, surgeries are performed using the arthroscopic method for a wide variety of shoulder joint problems.
The Poriya Hospital Shoulder Unit maintains a local and worldwide reputation. The Unit maintains relations with the finest Israeli and foreign shoulder surgeons.
The Unit's team is composed of three surgeons specializing in various shoulder pathologies, who perform surgeries using the arthroscopic method, replace shoulder joints and restore them, and repair shoulder damages.
Trauma
The Orthopedic Trauma Service provides treatment of closed and open fractures, and carries out a wide variety of surgeries for repairing damages to the upper and lower limbs, using the most advanced methods available in trauma treatment, such as: closed and open restoration, external and internal immobilizing systems, treatment of complications due to bone inflammations and infections. The arthroscopic method is used extensively for knee, ankle and shoulder pathologies.
